FOCUS After School

21st CCLC After School Program

In July of 2017, the Douglas County School System, in partnership with Communities in Schools of Douglas County, completed the third year of a five year 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant program. The program is known as FOCUS. The FOCUS program is designed to provide students with hands-on activities aligned with the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) such as the following: reading and math tutoring and enrichment, science experiments, entrepreneurial education, cultural arts education, mentoring program, homework help, tutoring, recreation, technology integration, character education, drug prevention education, and violence prevention education. Educational experiences provided through the FOCUS program are specifically designed to instill in the student a lifelong love of learning. Students also participated in transition activities focusing on helping students transition from middle to high school.

Our goals within the FOCUS program are as follows:

  • Increase achievement in all academic areas
  • Demonstrate enhanced reading ability and motivation
  • Homework Completion
  • Increase confidence and self esteem of students
  • Decrease grade retention
  • Decrease disciplinary issues
  • Decrease grade retention
  • Increase family involvement
  • Increase community engagement
  • Utilize scientifically based best practices with teachers and students

2016-2017 Success Stories

  • 57% of students achieved at the developing or higher level in Language Arts
  • 67% of students achieved at the developing or higher level in Math
  • 70% of students increased or maintained a A, B, or C average in Language Arts
  • 79% of students increased or maintained a A,B, or C average in Math
  • 97% of the parents who responded indicated they strongly agreed or agreed the FOCUS helped their child to complete homework.
